National Theatre of Scotland

Aberdeen Extreme was a major project delivered by The National Theatre of Scotland and Aberdeen City Council between August 2010 and March 2011 that involved a series of dynamic and exhilarating city-wide events linked to sport, theatre, dance, music and art. ‘Nothing to See Here’ was the theatrical culmination of the project, held at the Linksfield Community Centre in March 2011 with the help of 250 performers from across Aberdeen’s schools, colleges and the wider community.

This project was run in partnership with Transition Extreme Sports Ltd and Architecture & Design Scotland, with National Lottery funding through Creative Scotland (Inspire fund) and additional support from Shell and the Scottish Government.

The event was designed as a participatory theme ride where the audience members themselves became central characters; a high-octane adventure built into the dark and boarded up spaces of a disused building. Participants were challenged through a maze of fast-paced interactive scenarios, where they were able to affect outcomes and engage with strange characters.

As part of  the marketing and development for the project, The National Theatre of Scotland were interested in understanding more about potential audiences within the Aberdeen City Council Area. Culture Sparks carried out a postcode analysis and profiling exercise using MOSAIC Scotland, which allowed us to consider city-wide population and lifestyle statistics, and specifically highlight trends in the data relating to families and children aged 0 – 17.
